Bria Joyce was a Senior Constable with the Victoria Police Force.

She was killed in a horror head-on collision near Mildura on the New South Wales and Victoria border.

Senior Constable Joyce and her colleague were travelling in an unmarked police car when it collided with a Nissan Navara travelling in the opposite direction near Forbes Road, in Red Cliffs, at about 10pm on Friday, 8 April 2022.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said early investigations suggest the driver of the Nissan veered across the road and into the path of the police vehicle, causing a head-on collision.

The 25-year-old officer from the Mildura Highway Patrol and the male driver of the Nissan died at the scene.

"No one expects to go to work and not come home," Chief Commissioner Patton told a press conference.

"We're also nearing the second anniversary of the deaths of our four members who were killed on the Eastern Freeway in Kew.

"This will obviously impact substantially across the police force and it will also impact right throughout the community.

"Our hearts go out to all of those family and friends of all deceased persons. Our hearts go out to police colleagues."

Chief Commissioner Patton said attending a fatal collision is a "difficult" thing for any police officer to do but it is "especially difficult" when it involves a colleague who has died in a "tight-knit close community".

Ms Joyce's colleague, a 43-year-old male Leading Constable, was taken to Mildura Base Hospital before being flown to Melbourne.

He remains in a critical but stable condition at Royal Melbourne Hospital.

A third vehicle with two adults and three children also slammed into the back of the police vehicle amid the crash.

The three children survived the collision unscathed but were transferred to hospital for assessment.

The Chief Commissioner said Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating and will be at the scene for an extended period of time to determine happened.

He added there was no police pursuit occurring at the time of the smash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or who has dashcam footage, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers
