SUICIDE

David J. Cathcart, aged 63, at his home on Libby creek on the night of the 25th committed suicide by shooting himself in the heart with a 20-40 Winchester rifle. He used a stick to touch the trigger and held the gun between his legs while sitting on his bunk. He had lived with C.R. Johnstone and family for a number of years, being a relative of the family. During last winter, one of the children of Mr. Johnston died and since that time the old man lamented until he became deranged. The deceased until a few weeks ago was a very intelligent gentleman and during his life he was a good citizen. He was a member of the G.A.R. post at Bloomington. Served in the 138 Illinois Infantry. Judge C.R. Hoffman held the inquest with the following jurors: L.J. Getner, E.G. Pond, W. Peoples, H.F. Elliot, R.M. VanGilder, Mike Kelly.
