Prominent Attorney's Rites Today
Funeral services for Robert Gray Chandler, 73 who died Saturday in Schumpert Hospital were held in Osborn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev McNair Smith, pastor of Fairfield Ave. Presbyterian Church officiating.
Mr Chandler was the son of Dr. Green Croft Chandler and Herries Gray Chandler. He was born in Shreveport and resided here all his life. He was a member of the Louisiana and Shreveport bar associations, and valedictorian of the 1922 Louisiana State University Law School graduating class and Pi Kappa Alpha. He opened his law practice the next year, and served on the Caddo Parish Democratic Executive Committee from 1932 to 1940 and was Shreveport City Attorney 1933-34. In 1943, he was named chief of the local Office of Price Administration and served as Special Assistant to the Louisiana Attorney General from 1944 to 1948. In 1948 he was appointed to the National States Rights Commission and he was instrumental in organizing the Louisiana States' Rights Party in 1956.
Survivors incude his widow Nell Orman Chandler, a son Robert Grey Chandler, Jr., a daughter Ella Chandler Edwards, a sister, Mrs Herries Chandler, and eight grandchildren.
Pallbearers were J. Harmon Chandler, Greene Croft Chandler, Jack Lamb. Charles Peatross, Andrew Querbes, Jr., John D. Ewing, Jr. Clairborne Cook, Darrell E. George, R. F. Kayser, Jr. and William F. Ford.
