Johnstone Vance, 60, managing editor and publisher of the New Britain Herald for many years, died Wednesday at few Britain General Hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home, 191 Reservoir Road, Tuesday morning:. In addition to his other duties, he was president of the Herald Publishing Company, a post he held since 1938 when he succeeded his late mother.

The publisher's wife, Mrs. Ann G. Vance, was on her way home from Florida when his death occurred. Late Wednesday she was located in Raleigh, N.C.. and informed of the death.

A native and lifelong resident of this city, he was the son of the late Robert and Matilda (O'Connor) Vance. His father founded the Herald and was a former congressman and mayor.

Mr. Vance graduated from New Britain Senior High School, the Fishburne Military Academy in Waynesboro, Va., and the University School in New Haven. He was a veteran of World War I, serving as a lieutenant in the Navy. He was a member of the Water Bureau of the Metropolitan District Commission for about 10 years, a post he relinquished last January, and he was a former member of the State Board of Mediation and Arbitration.

He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Associated Press, the Connecticut Newspaper Publishers Association, the Lotos Club of New York, the National Press of Washington, the New Britain Club and the Shuttle Meadow Club. He was a past president of the Associated Dailies of Connecticut and was a 32nd Degree Mason.

Besides his wife he leaves one brother, Robert C. Vance, co-publisher of The Herald; a sister, Mrs. Agnes Weld, all of this city; and a nephew and two nieces.
