Prime Minister of Portugal. He was a mining engineer, senior civil servant and minister. António Maria da Silva was born on May 26, 1873, in the city of Lisbon, into a family from Arganil. He graduated in Mining Engineering from the Army School and was posted to the Ministry of Public Works, and also authored articles on geology and minerals. His political experience was as an administrator of the Redondo City Council, who was much criticized for his management and dismissed from office. In 1908 he joined the Freemasons and the Carbonary, becoming involved in conspiratorial practices against the Monarchy. He married Adelina Antónia Marques de Lemos in 1912, with whom he had five children. At the time of the establishment of the Republic, he was one of the predominant Republican figures, having been appointed to several general directorates of public entities. He was also elected deputy for the Silves circle in the constituent assembly as an independent republican, being elected in all the legislatures of the First Republic, with the exception of Sidónio Pais' government. In 1914, he joined the Democratic Party, where he was a minister in several legislatures. With the departure of politician Afonso Costa, António Maria da Silva became a central figure in the party, becoming prime minister four times, totaling two years, being the prime minister to hold the position for the longest time during the First Republic, also the last of the First Republic. With the revolution of May 28, 1926, he was deported to Madeira Island, being part of the republican opposition to the military dictatorship, being amnestied in 1931, but he never ceased to oppose the dictatorial regime in Portugal until his death.
