Married first to Mary Davis. Mary died in August 1874. She left two small children John W, and George Summerlin. A third son had died earlier. Also, only a few weeks after Mary died, an unnamed infant six weeks old of John and Mary died (September 1874)

John S and Bettie had no children. He died 6 years after they were married.
