John Hitt, Sr is the son of the immigrant Peter Hitt and his wife Ellsbeth Cathrina Otterback. He was born about 1715. John was married twice. His first wife's name is unknown. Many researchers list his first wife as Sarah Day Pace, but this is an error. Sarah Day Pace did marry a John Hitt, but it was John Hitt son of Harman and Mary Ann (Weaver) Hitt. By his first wife he had two agreed upon children. John Hitt, Jr and Elias Hitt. It is also possible that Dinah Hitt who married Nicholas Lawler was his daughter but this is unproven. His second wife's name was Mary, but her maiden name is unknown. They had the following eight children most likely. Mary Ann Hitt who was married 3 times Joel Martin, William George Strange, and Joseph Hall, Peter Hitt who married Hannah James, Martin Hitt who married Mary Molly James, Leanor who married John Proudfoot, Susannah who married Arthur Gladstone, Aaron who married Catherine Holtzclaw, William who married first to Lydia "Liddie" her maiden name is unknown, and second to Malinda Roley, and lastly Martha who married Joshua Kemper.

We can say with certainty that he died sometime in 1782 in Fauquier County, Virginia. His inventory was taken in Fauquier County on Nov. 14, 1782.

In the Fauquier County, Virginia Court Order Book 1780-1784, page 78, on October 28, 1782 the following is recorded, " On the motion of John Hitt who made oath and executed and acknowledged bond as the law directs. Certificate is granted to him for obtaining letters of administration of the Estate of John Hitt deceased.

Ordered that James Stuart, John Stuart, Thomas Porter, and Samuel Porter or any three of them being first sworn do appraise the Estate of John Hitt d'ced and returned the appraisement to the county."

Fauquier County, Virginia Court Order Book 1780-1784, page 91, on March 24, 1783 records "An inventory and appraisement of the estate of John Hitt deceased was returned and ordered to be recorded."
