Velma R. Atkinson, 95 years old, passed away at 6:35 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Mrs. Atkinson was born on November 20, 1926 in Detroit, MI, to the late Matthew and Velma (Hoofer) Kopsky. On March 21, 1947, Velma and Chester G. Atkinson were united in marriage. Her husband preceded her in death on October 13, 1967. Two sons, John Michael and Jay Dee Atkinson; her sister, Vera Peach; and two brothers, Vern and Virgil Kopsky have all preceded her in death.
Mrs. Atkinson is survived by her daughter, Vicki Karre of Granger; son, James (Kathey) Atkinson of Pleasant Hill, MO; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Karre, Michael Jay Karre, Reade Atkinson, Jamie Copeland, and Paige Temple; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jeane Schmidt of Hutchinson, KS, and Margaret Pechanec of Timken, KS; and many nieces and nephews.
Per Mrs. Atkinson's wishes, there will be no services or visitation. Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, South Bend, is assisting the family.
