On 13 February 1864, Alonzo enlisted in the Civil War at the young age of 18-years old. Alonzo was severely wounded in the left hand by a bullet (or ball) that went through his hand by his upper knuckles. He was shot on 8 April 1864 at the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads in Louisiana. There are two old photographs of his hand that was in his pension files. In 1911 there is a statement in Alonzo's CW Pension files that state he should have had his hand amputated, but it was not. So because it was not amputated, Alonzo developed severe arthritis and had difficulty using it. Alonzo stated in his Civil War Pension files that he had pain that shot up all the way to his arm and neck. Supposedly by 1911, the pain was so severe that half of the time he stayed in bed.
Shortly after the war, he married Nancy Eleanor Neel. At the time, Nancy was known as "Nancy Davis," because she had married a man named Jacob Davis prior to the war, who also served in the Civil War, but was killed during his service to the country. Nancy's parents were Jonathan Neel and Nancy Tucker.
Alonzo and Nancy were married on 15 September 1864 in Lytle City, Iowa County, Iowa. This information comes from Alonzo's Civil War Pension files, where Nancy (his widow) had to prove her marriage to Alonzo and supplied the government with a typed certificate from the Iowa county Clerk that was signed, dated, and accompanied a certificate verifying the information. Lytle city at one time was a thriving community, but later became a ghost town when the railroad was built away from the town.
According to the 1900 US Census, Nancy stated that she was the mother of eight children, but only four were living at the time. The children that I have found records for are the following:
1. PHILIP HENRY SHERIDAN MOORE -- b. 13 June 1865 in Iowa County, Iowa. Died 1944 in Nebraska and buried at Beaver Valley Cemetery in Sheridan County, Nebraska. Note: Sheridan never married. He became blind at the age of 17-years old after a horse bucked him off. In his latter years, he lived with his brother Alonzo M. Moore, Jr.
2. JONATHAN B. MOORE -- b. About 1868 in Iowa County, Iowa. Died at a young age, before 1880 US Census.
3. NANCY AMANDA MOORE -- b. 12 December 1869 in Marengo, Iowa, Iowa. d. unknown. Married Alfred J. Wing
4. ALONZO MONTGOMERY MOORE, Jr. -- b. 12 April 1871 in Troy, Doniphan County, Kansas. Died 20 October 1944 in Chadron, Nebraska. Married Mary Minnette Potter. Buried at the Beaver Valley Cemetery in Sheridan County, Nebraska.
5. WILLIAM COLUMBUS MOORE -- b. 28 December 1873 in Marengo, Iowa, Iowa. Died 18 September 1946 in Alliance, Nebraska and buried at Alliance Cemetery. He married Theresa Schmidt.
6. JESSIE L. MOORE -- b. 1 January 1879 in Marengo, Iowa, Iowa. Died: unknown. By 1900 US Census, Jessie is deceased.
According to Alonzo Montgomery Moore's death certificate, he died from Broncho Pneumonia and died in the township called "Highland" in Washington County, Kansas.
