Matthew Paul Deady was the Son of Daniel and Mary Ann (McSweeny)Deady born 12 May 1824 in Talbot Co. Maryland. At the age of 16 Matthew apprenticed as a blacksmith. He then realized that blacksmithing wasn't for him and went back to school and got a teaching certificate, in Ohio. In continuing his education found he was very interested in law and was soon admitted to the Ohio bar. In 1849 he came West. Matthew didn't have any money to travel with a wagon train so he attached himself to an Army troop escorting a military paymaster to Fort Vancouver. He paid his way by doing black smithing. He arrived 14 Nov 1849 and shortly after moved to Lafayette where he taught for awhile. By Spring he was admitted to the Oregon Bar.
On 24 June 1852 he married Lucy Ann Henderson, ten years his junior, daughter of Robert Henderson. To this union four children were born; Edward, Henderson, Paul and Mary.
