"Orville L. Allen, 75, of RD 3 Hunlock Creek, was pronounced dead on arrival at Mercy Hospital Tuesday afternoon at 5:14 after he was stricken at the wheel of his car while driving home on Interstate Route 81.
Born in Binghamton, NY he resided in the Wyoming Valley area the past 40 years. He had been employed as an upholstery by United Furniture Manufacturers, Wilkes-Barre, and had been a member of Wilkes-Barre Police Department for 24 years, retiring in 1960. He formerly was associated with the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home, Wilkes-Barre, for 19 years, retiring in 1969. He served as president of the Uniformed Units of Irem Temple and was president and chief of the Irem Temple Police Unit.
He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Wilkes-Barre, serving as president of the church consistory, elder and sexton and as representative to the Synod. He also was a member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church, Pike's Creek. He was a Navy veteran of WWI.
Surviving are his widow, the former Lovelia Hummel Blythe; daughters, Mrs. Louis Brandt Jr., Nazareth and Mrs. David Woodruff, Linnefield; son, Edward, Newton, NJ; sister Mrs. Garel Perham, Niles, Michigan; five grandchildren.
Funeral will be Friday at 11 from H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home, 451 N. Main Street, with Rev. Earl Roberts, pastor of Maple Grove United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment in Memorial Shrine Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Landmark Lodge 442, F&AM, will conduct Masonic services t 8pm.
