Born in Kilfinane, Limerick in Manster, Ireland, on October 22, 1855, the son of John and Anna Herbert Bolan, William Bolan emigrated with his family to the United States. At age sixteen he entered the Novitiate of the Brothers at Carondelet, Missouri, where he received the habit and the religious name of Brother Adrian Joseph. He was sent to Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis where he died of a "brain fever" in June of 1872 at age seventeen, having been with the De La Salle Christian Brothers for only one year.
