Johan was born on October 18, 1906 in Randheim, Ringebu kommune, to Jens Pedersen and Klara Johansdotter. He was the beloved brother of Sverre, Randine, Eugenie, Alfred, and Conrad. He also had a brother, Paul Johan, who was born after he died and who was named after him. Johan drowned while playing in the Vala river in Ringebu on May 29, 1917. He was laid to rest at the Ringebu Kirke on June 6, 1917.
