Biography:
Sophronia was born to Malachi and Catherine Lanier Parrish in 1859 in Bulloch County, Georgia. She went by several nicknames: Phronie, Phronia and Fronie.

By the 1860 census, the family is living in the Bengal section of Bulloch County. The following family are listed: Malachi, age 29, Catherine, age 22, Ann, age 2 and Sophronia, age 1. According to Roger Allen, "Located at the intersection of Blacksack Branch and Lotts Creek, Bengal sat on an Indian trail that became the old Burkhalter Road. Eight miles southwest of Statesboro, this community of some 20 families was established in 1855 and had the second post office established in Bulloch County."

On 2 Jan 1866 when Sophronia was about 6 1/2 years old, Colman C. Parrish, her 1-year-old brother died. His death was shortly after Sherman's army ravaged the land and made their way to Savannah, GA. Later that year her family moved to new home in the Briar Patch area of Bulloch County near the Ash Branch Cemetery.

In April of 1869, when Sophronia was almost 10 years old, her mother died. By October of 1869 her father married Henrietta Beasley.

In the 1870 census the following family are listed: Malachi Parish age 39, Henrietta Parish, age 24, Ann E. Marsh, age 23, Burton Beasley, age 23, (and Malachi's children by his deceased wife Catherine Lanier Parrish) Henry Parish, age 17, Ann J Parish, age 13, Saphrone Parish, age 11, Lucy, Parish, age 8 and Ella Parish, age 4.

In the 1880 census, the family was living in Brier Patch and the following family members are listed: Malekiah Parish, age 50, Henrietta Parish, age 33, (these are the children of Malachi and Catherine Lanier Parrish) Ann Jane Parish, age 23, Sophronia Parish, age 21, Lucy E Parish, age 19, Ella F Parish, age 14, (these are the children of Malachi and Henrietta Parrish) Sarah E Parish, age 10, Mary T Parish, age 8, Abbie Parish, age 6, Vicky Parish, age 4 and Emmit W Parish, age 2.

Around the age of 21, she went to Savannah, Georgia. After a short stay she returned to Bulloch County, Georgia.

On 23 Sep 1882, Sophronia's half sister, Anna Eber Parrish died. She was 1 year and 9 months old. The cause of her death is not known. The family buried her in Ash Branch Cemetery.

On 11 Oct 1884, Sophronia lost another half sister to death. Allean A Parrish was 1 year and 2 months old when she died. The family buried her in Ash Branch Cemetery.

On 3 January 1897, Sophronia's sister, Ella J. Parrish Attaway died, leaving her husband and a newborn daughter named Maggie Ella Attaway. Because Ella's husband needed to work, Malachi and Henrietta took Maggie into their home and raised her.

It is not known when she met Joseph Griffin, a widower. On 6 Apr 1898, when Sophronia was 38 years old, they married in Bulloch County, Georgia.

However, by 1900 she was back in Savannah and was running a boarding house. In the 1900 census, Sophronia "Phronie Griffin" is listed as a 37 year old widow, along with a son Freddie Griffin, age 3 years old and 3 boarders. The address was 323 Perry. It has not been determined what happened to Freddie. Of note, her husband died in 1929. The 1900, 1901 and 1902 Savannah, Georgia City Directories list her boarding house address as 323 Perry West. The boarding house is no longer standing. The parking lot and street next to the Savannah Civic Center are now where the boarding house was.

She died 7 March 1902 in Savannah, Georgia at 42 years of age. The cause of her death was "Dycentery/Uraemia". This was probably from food poisoning or contaminated water. This could also be from, Salmonella, Shigella or Staph. Less likely but other possibilities are Cholera and Typhoid. Her body was transported back to Pembroke, Georgia. The transport was believed to have been on the train. Trains at that time had icebox/cooler cars and trains transported coffins per the Georgia Historical Society. The alternative to the train would have been a horse/mule wagon going from the home near Ash Branch Cemetery to downtown Savannah where she had lived then back to Bulloch County, Georgia. Embalming became popular during the civil war but it is not known if she was embalmed in Savannah in 1902.

It is not known where she is buried but it is believed she is buried in one of the unmarked graves in Ash Branch Cemetery in Bulloch County near her family home site. Years ago, Al Chassereau recorded multiple graves in the cemetery and no grave was listed for her. In extensive searches in newspapers, court house records, calls to funeral homes in Pembroke and family documents, no descriptions of her burial was found. In discussions with family members, the consensus is the belief that her father, Malachi and her brother Emitt William buried her in an unmarked grave in one of the spaces [8]where Malachi and Henrietta are buried (see photo with spaces around her parents grave). This is merely supposition since it is confirmed her body was to be returned to Pembroke. Even though other family are buried in Ash Branch Cemetery, no grave for her has been found in Pembroke or at Ash Branch.
