Private US Army Civil War
Samuel married Rosanna Emily Smith, January 17, 1875 in Raleigh County, WV.
Samuel and Emily had six known children.
1. Rachel Ann (Beckett) Stewart
2. John Roberts Beckett
3. Joseph Willis Beckett
4. Charles Creed Beckett
5. Matilda "Tida" (Beckett) Bird
6. Oliver Greene Beckett
1890 was a sad year for the Beckett family. Samuel's father John died May 7th, then Samuel died June 9th and his sister Elizabeth died June 15th.
Samuel's widow Emily married second James A. Matherly, Feb. 4, 1899 in Raleigh County, WV. James was previously married to Eliza E. (Dalton) Matherly and they had divorced.
Emily's monument only has the BECKETT name on it, but her death was recorded under the MATHERLY name.
It appears that James and Emily had separated or divorced before the 1910 census as she was living with her son John and was listed as "widowed."
