CIVIL WAR VETERAN. SERVED WITH CO F 87TH PA INFANTRY

The son of John & Anna Maria (Coster) Warner, in 1860 he was a painter living in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private with Co. F, 16th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1861. He then enlisted in Gettysburg September 2, 1861, and mustered into federal service at York September 25 as a private with Co. F, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. While home on furlough, he was shot in the arm during a personal dispute with a neighbor. Returning to duty, he was allegedly wounded in the hand November 30, 1863, during the Mine Run Campaign, but many comrades thought it was self-inflicted wound. Hospitalized thereafter, he discharged by surgeon's certificate October 7, 1874, six days prior to the rest of the regiment's original three-year enlistees received discharges. Both Bates History of Pennsylvania Volunteers and Prowell's History of the 87th Pennsylvania Volunteers list him as "Werner." His brother John was the sutler for the 87th Pennsylvania.

He married Emma Luellen Herbert and fathered John William (b. 06/23/66), George E. (b. 12/02/67, d. 03/18/84), Mary Veronica (b. 03/07/70 - married a Walker and then Harry Thompson), Emma Tresa (b. 06/13/75 - married W. O. Noel), and Ella Frances Falker (b. 08/20/78 - married Joseph Howard). In 1890, he and his son John nearly drown when they tried to ford flood-swollen Rock Creek, and the carriage upset. Cause of death is listed as "chronic myocarditis with decompensation [sic]" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor.
