It's not easy condensing a man's life of almost 101 years into a few paragraphs, especially one as sweet and kind as Jimmy Sherard. Known for his compassionate heart and gentle spirit, Jim peacefully passed through God's heavenly gates at precisely 4:00 on the morning of August 26th. As always, his adored wife of 80 years, Veda, was by his side. Theirs was a true love story for the ages.

It all started on October 17, 1921. Born in Abbeville, SC to James H. Sherard, Sr. and Minnie Blount Sherard, Jimmy lived a 'Norman Rockwell small-town life'. He was devoted to his mother and father and always credited them for their many sacrifices to provide the best for he and his beloved sister, Nanette. However, this life also came with responsibility. At 10 years old until he graduated from high school, Jimmy bicycled the Abbeville paper route from one end of town to the other. His mother would wake him promptly at 4:00 each morning to start his 5-mile track with his dog Skip running along to help deliver papers from porch to porch, and all before breakfast and school. Until the day he died he woke every morning at 4:00 and mentioned it often. Godwink.

At age 16, Jimmy left Abbeville for Clemson University for his pre-dental training. Upon graduating in 1939 he entered Atlanta Southern Dental College (Emory University School of Dentistry). He loved to tell the story that on the first day of school he "spotted the cutest little freckle-faced girl I had ever seen" from Clinton Tennessee. Veda Sanders was her name and she was one of 3 females in a class of 102. Jimmy was smitten and that was that. They married March 20, 1942 and remarkably celebrated their 80 anniversary this year.

Upon graduating from Atlanta Southern Dental College in November of 1943, he proudly served in the United States Navy, Dental Officer 2nd Lieutenant in Pensacola before boarding the USS Curtis stationed in the China Sea until the end of WWII in 1946. He continued to serve in the Navel Reserves until 1960. Dr. Sherard belonged to many professional organizations. Due to his ability to excel he was at some point President of all of them. He was a pioneer and an expert in his field of Endodontics. He wrote chapters in many textbooks and lectured all over the world.

During their years in Atlanta, Jimmy and Veda often visited the Highlands/Cashiers area. So, in 1972 when dear friends extended an invitation to visit for the weekend, they accepted with pleasure. They enjoyed their experience so much, they bought the little house next door, which just happened to be 'For Sale'. It would be a weekend retreat from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta. By the time Jim retired in 1989, their family had grown and so had the little house. They left Atlanta, the city they loved for 50 years for Highlands, the town they have loved ever since.

Throughout the years Jim loved his church and was an active member at Trinity Presbyterian and First Presbyterian Church in Atlanta and First Presbyterian Church in Highlands. Jim's healthy years were filled with volunteer activities. He loved to volunteer in any capacity needed, whether it was cooking grits and washing pans after feeding the homeless every Sunday morning for 20 years, or sorting mail at the local hospital.

Jim never met a stranger and had a way of making everyone in his path feel special, noticed and appreciated. He always kept a little bunch of neatly folded but lovingly worn sticky notes in his back pocket with names, dates, special tidbits of information, just in case needed. He had a genuine charm and love for people. He loved telling stories - funny stories, sweet stories, short stories, long stories time and time again, but it was always fun to listen because his delivery was priceless.

In addition to Veda and family, his number one hobby and passion was golf. He began playing in the Navy and continued until he was 96 years old. He was a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club, Cherokee Town and Country Club and Wildcat Country Club. He was a fierce competitor and a stickler for the rules. He had a remarkable short game and 4 hole-in-ones, the last at 95 years old on Wildcat #2 with club of choice - driver. He was renowned for the "Jimmie Gimme", which he begrudgingly gave on occasion. He firmly believed golf was played from tee to cup, just like the rules say. He loved the etiquette of the game, being surrounded by nature's beauty, the countless friends he made on the course, sharing the game with his children, growing old with the game, and most of all, playing on Sunday afternoons with Veda-Lee, who was also quite good and steady with the putter. They were the perfect team.

Jim Sherard was a southern gentleman to perfection. He was the kindest most caring son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, cousin and uncle. He always said he hated to be "braggadocios" about his family, but relished in their many accomplishments. He loved each and every one with his whole heart, and let them know at every opportunity. Jimmy Sherard will be greatly and dearly missed by all who knew him. Sweet dreams.

Predeceased by his beloved parents James H. Sherard, Sr. and Minnie Blount Sherard, sister Nanette Hamilton, brother-in law William Hamilton, daughter Sandra Sherard Bethea, granddaughter Mabry Morris Spence and great grandson Whitaker James Morris.

The family gratefully appreciates the many special acts of love by dear friends and caregivers over the years. May God bless you all.

Contributions in memory of Jimmy may be given to Blue Ridge Free Dental Clinic at 110 US-64, Cashiers, NC 28717 or Highlands Community Child Development Center (HCCDC) at 89 Church St., Highlands, NC 28741. A memorial service to be held at Highlands First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, August 30 at 2:00 p.m. with reception following at church.
