John D Adams was born with or took the name of John D Henion. His mother was Phebe Devore. He's living with Samuel Henion in the 1850 census, but a Devore genealogy book says that Phebe Devore was first married to a William Adams. John uses Henion in the 1850 Federal Census, but when he married Mary Ann Willis in 1857, he uses the name Adams and says his father is Samuel Adams. He and his brother (or half-brother) Joseph Henion purchased adjoining cemetery plots in Sparta Cemetery on the same day in 1892, L/20 for Adams and L/18 for Henion. (John uses "Adams" in Federal census records, legal land sales, and marriages. He uses "Henion" in State census records and for the birth of his son, Jacob.)

He married Mary Ann Willis in 1857. She is buried in the same plot. After her death, he married Mary Elizabeth Mann Card, widow of Peter Card, in 1898.

DNA appears to indicate that John's father was not Samuel Henion.
