According to his obituaries, he travelled west to California with his father from Missouri where he had been born. In 1864 he arrived in Arizona, but stayed in Ehrenburg for a time to go into business with Abe Frank who had a mercantile. He soon went into the freighting business and his teams delivered goods between Vulture Mine, Wickenburg, Prescott and Phoenix. He also opened a flour mill operation in Phoenix.

By 1880 he was married to Vina Doane and living in Phoenix. According to one news article about his death, they were married five years prior. There are no children living with them at this time.

Bryan became one of the largest land owners in Arizona, with holdings around Phoenix and Prescott. At the time of his death, newspapers estimated his assets at $75,000-100,000. His probate found in Maricopa County listed his only heirs as his unnamed father in California, his widow Vina, and his brothers Moses and Thomas J. Bryan.

The funeral was held starting from the Sherman House and a service was held at Marina Street Church in Prescott. His probate shows A. G. Randall of Prescott was the undertaker and was paid for the burial. There is no mention of where the burial occurred, however Citizen's Cemetery was the public cemetery in use at that time. If another location is found, please notify for correction.

Jonathan had a brother, George, who was buried in Masons Cemetery in Phoenix. All source information for this memorial is located in that file and available through Pioneers Cemetery Association ([email protected]).
