Shortly before the World Chief Guide, Lady Baden Powell, was to present her with the Badge of Fortitude on Saturday, 10-year-old Elizabeth Willis died.
Elizabeth, crippled since the age of six, attended Brownie meetings in a wheelchair for three years. She suffered from an obscure disease, and in recent months had little more than the use of her fingers.
On Saturday afternoon she was to have travelled to Coventry with her father to receive the Badge which is awarded for "unusually great courage and endurance." But on Friday she had a fall at the special school she attended. Instead of going to the meeting of the 3rd Leamington Brownie Pack as usual, she stayed in bed.
Miss D. Wildman, Divisional Commissioner of Girl Guides, said: "Elizabeth was an absolutely marvellous girl. She was always cheerful and most thoughtful for other people, particularly her parents. She was looking forward to the presentation but she could not understand why she had been selected for it. She was a great example to everybody."
