Services for Clarence E. "Poppie" Knapp, 93, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.


Mr. Knapp died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at his home.


He was born April 19, 1911, in Kickapoo, the son of Albert and Aletha Oliphant Knapp. He graduated from Lansing High School in 1931. He moved from the Leavenworth area to Lawrence, where he spent most of his life.


Mr. Knapp owned and operated Log Cabin Grocery Store at 19th and Louisiana streets from 1948 to 1953. He delivered milk for Golden Crest Dairy from 1953 to 1956. He started work as a foreman for the power plant at Kansas University in 1956 and retired as a supervisor in 1976. He then transported new cars for Jim Clark Motors until 1993.


He was a member and past noble grand of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows No. 4 in Lawrence for 66 years and a member of Rebekah Lodge No. 3754. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 309 for more than 55 years, North Lawrence Improvement Assn., and Central United Methodist Church.


He married Garnett Hillix on July 29, 1937, in Kansas City, Kan. She died Jan. 5, 1995.


A daughter, Dorothy Jeane Knapp, died in 1942.



The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.


The family suggests memorials to Hospice Care in Douglas County, sent in care of the mortuary.
