Virginia was orphaned young, and was raised in the Lutheran Orphans Home in Zelienople, PA. She studied nursing at Brenau College in Gainesville, GA. After working as a nurse at Passavant Hospital in Pittsburgh, she became a Lutheran missionary and served eight years in Rajahmundrey, India. However, she was forced to return to the US for a time due to ill health.
She was returning to India to teach at a mission school when she died in the wreck of the British steamship Egypt, sunk off the island of Ushant, France after it was rammed by the French ship Seine. Although 242 aboard survived, twelve passengers and 84 crew were lost with the ship, and one person later died in the hospital. Virginia's body was never found.
