(also known as Ruthe Ford in her career. She worked briefly in advertising and also organized fashion shows)
Ruth was the youngest and last surviving child of George Washburn and Anna Cleva (Benson) Varney. She was born in Oakland, CA. Growing up, she attended charm school and had dance and modeling lessons, funded by her older sister, Leona.
During WWII, Ruthe worked briefly in the war office.
After WWII, she met Everett (Red) Wohlford from Minnesota who had served in the Air Corps and was visiting his brother in the bay area. They married in 1947. They soon relocated to Sacramento to raise their family.
While in Sacramento, Ruthe lived close to her mother and her brother, Bob. She loved to visit her sister (Irene) and her family, while they lived in the SF bay area.
After years of discord, Ruthe and Red divorced, which was finalized in 1975.
Ruthe met Joe Catania of West Sacramento in about 1983 after he lost his wife. They married in 1986. Joe died in 1994 after a 6-month battle with lung cancer.
In about 2002, Ruthe's daughter introduced her to Roland Lee, a retired fireman who had recently lost his wife. She married Roland, who later died in 2019.
She and Roland, originally from Annapolis, resided in the Sacramento area and then in Annapolis and then moved to Las Vegas, then later back to Sacramento before relocating to Annapolis again in 2016 to live with her daughter. Her final move was to Chapin, SC, where she continued to reside with her daughter until her death. Ruthe showed signs of dementia for a few months and in her final months was bed ridden.
She leaves behind her son Mark, his wife Edith, and their 5 children; her son Brad, his wife Debbie, and their 6 children; and her daughter, Roxanne, and her 3 sons. Along with her 14 grandchildren are their spouses and children. She also leaves nieces and nephews and their families, of whom she was quite fond.
Ruthe loved to entertain and was the life of any party. At 4th of July celebrations, she loved to sing patriotic songs. She loved to watch old movies and read about Hollywood stars. She used her creativity to write characters for her romance stories. She aspired to writing a book but it was never completed.
Ruthe's ancestors include several pioneer families who crossed the plains to Utah during the 1850's. She also descends from John Howland who arrived in America on the Mayflower.
