Obituary

George Allen Robertson – Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend to many.

George A. Robertson died peacefully at West Bloomfield Health and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his family on May 18, 2022 after a sharp decline due to health complications. A distinguished gentleman who cherished his family and friends, supported the Arts and many charitable organizations; George's worldly perspective on life was an asset to everyone that knew him. Throughout his life, George's friends and family benefited from his sharp memory, intense engagement with life, always with utmost dignity.

George was born on March 19, 1938 in Santa Monica, California, the second son to James Tindall Robertson Sr and Melba (Jongewaard) Robertson. His brother, James Tindall Robertson Jr, preceded him in death in 1993. The Robertson family frequently moved around the country and abroad during George's adolescence since his father worked for General Motors and then Ford Motor Company. George attended schools in Adelaide, Australia, Birmingham, MI and Bloomfield, MI. George and his brother started boarding school at Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, MI shortly before their parents moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil. He graduated from Cranbrook Schools in 1955. In 1960, George received dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Psychology from The University of Michigan.

George met his future wife while attending the University of Michigan. He and Eunice Lavon O'Neal married in 1963 and had two sons, Todd Cameron and James Tindall III (Erin). George was the dear Grandad to Cameron James and Parker Mitchell, both serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was also a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews. His beloved wife, Lavon, preceded him in death in 2005.

George began his career with General Motors Company at a Detroit plant in a supervisory position. The training and experience he gained at the plant level led him to the realization that he wanted to develop his skills working with people instead of product. This led him to pursue a role in Personnel Administration, where he spent much of his career, ultimately in a position with divisional global HR responsibilities. General Motors moved the family around from Detroit, New Jersey, West Virginia, Philadelphia, Flint and ultimately back to Bloomfield, MI.

After his retirement in 2003 from General Motors, George was not one to take up a leisurely hobby, and instead obtained his realtor license. He thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the realty profession since it allowed him to remain active and cater to clients and friends and clients who became friends. George officially retired from Real Estate in February, 2022.

George has maintained decades long friendships from his time at Cranbrook, University of Michigan, Delta Chi fraternity, work colleagues & clients from both General Motors and his post-retirement Real Estate profession, and dear neighbors from Flint and Bloomfield, MI. George was a member of Franklin Community Church where he felt welcome and enjoyed the music. He was a well-travelled man and the epitome of class and sophistication. George was an animal lover and dog-dad to several rescues that were perfect companions to him after the death of Lavon. His most recent greyhound, Tony, was a retired racer from Florida that kept George company and slowed down enough to match George's gingerly pace on their daily walks through the neighborhood.

George will be immensely missed by all those that loved him.

Family will receive friends at AJ Desmond and Sons Funeral Home, 32515 Woodward Ave, Royal Oak, MI 48073 on Thursday, May 26, 2022 from 2-7pm.

A memorial service will be held at Franklin Community Church, 26425 Wellington Road on Friday, May 27, 2022 at 10am.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Michigan Humane Society or Franklin Community Church.
