She met and subsequently married James J Childs of York, ME on June 20, 1954. They settled in York, ME to raise a family of five children. She was immediately accepted into her extended family and very much loved by all.
Shirley was a warm, loving, soft-spoken woman who preferred harmony over confrontation. She belonged to the Rebekah Lodge, enjoyed traveling and followed the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots. She also occupied her free time with several hobbies such as crossword puzzles, and those that exemplified
Her unselfish, giving spirit: knitting, sewing, baking and decorating cakes. She dedicated her life completely and happily to the welfare of her children and family, working part-time jobs to support their higher education and helping to care for grandchildren and members of her extended family in need.
After the family nest emptied, Shirley worked full-time at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until enjoying a lengthy retirement in Exeter, NH.
She is pre-deceased by her parents, brothers John and Raymond Barr and her twin daughters Mary Ann and Linda Joyce. She leaves behind her brother George Barr of Arlington MA; her children, James J. Childs and his wife, Larisa of Bolton MA; Kenneth D and his wife Debbie of Summerville,
SC; Stephen of Fayetteville, NC; Linda Jean and her husband Raymond of Dover, NH; and John C and his wife Shirley of Epping, NH. She also leaves behind 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Shirley will be deeply missed by those who had the fortune of knowing her.
Calling hours for family and friends will be held from 5 to 7pm on Friday, February 11th in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York, Maine. A funeral service will be held at 11am on Saturday, February 12th in the York Street Baptist Church, 61 York Street, York, Maine. Interment will be private in the First Parish Cemetery.
