Obituary for James Lawrence Conrad
On February 3, 2022, James Lawrence (Larry) Conrad, age 77 of Alexandria, Virginia passed away. Beloved husband for 53 years to Julieta B. Conrad; cherished father "Papi" to Carmela Ann Conrad Slatton and husband Mark, Malena Lauren Conrad Murray and husband Richard, and James Franciscus Conrad; preceded by Giulianna Elise Conrad; beloved grandfather of Kyle Manuel Conrad and wife Deja Monique, Justin Miguel Slatton and wife Kira Nicole, Alexa Milagros Rice and husband Steven Joseph Rice, and Tiffani Lynn Conrad; and great grandchildren: Riley Laine Giovingo, Roman James Conrad, Isabella Kirstin and Ava Ann Slatton. Beloved sister of Lucille Conrad Wilkerson. Preceded in death by his parents Marion and James Conrad; and brother Norris Monroe Conrad. In 1963, Larry joined the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS Hancock during the Vietnam War. During his 36 year Military career he was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Navy Reserve Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal for service during the Vietnam War. He joined the U.S. Navy Reserves, and retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in 1999. After active duty in the U.S. Navy, Larry had an illustrious career with the Federal Government. He retired in 2003 as an accountant after 40 years of service as a civil servant with the Department of Commerce, Department of Agriculture and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He also served as a board director on the board of directors with the Department of Agriculture Federal Credit Union and Transportion Federal Credit Union (TFCU) for several years. During his early retirement, he worked as a tax consultant at H&R Block. Larry was a graduate of Strayer University with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting. In his free time, he enjoyed his time with family members, helping out, traveling and especially to Virginia Beach, attending car shows, and gatherings with friends. He had an intense passion of a lifelong hobby of classic cars, a love of ice cream, coffee, and an ice-cold Corona on a hot summer's day overlooking the water. Larry's children are proud of his accomplishments. Heaven gained an angel on February 3rd.
