"Elsie" was know to my sisters and I as Aunt Christine. Aunt Christine was married to our Uncle James and she was a key figure in our lives growing up.
Although we lived in Michigan, for many years we traveled to Arkansas on summer vacation and stayed in walking distance of Uncle James and Aunt Christine.
A hard worker and a sweet natured heart made her someone that all of us girls loved and now miss.
Elsie Christine Smith, 73 of Piggott, AR passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 in the Piggott Community Hospital in Piggott, AR.
She was born October 8, 1928 in Campbell, Dunklin County, MO the daughter of the late Cecil R. and Betty (Benson) Karnes.
She was united in marriage to James Edward Smith on February 24, 1945. And to this union, seven children were born. She was preceded in death by one infant son.
James and Christine Smith had 3 sons and 3 daughters:
1-Charles Edward Smith, Sr. born March 31, 1946
2-Glen Edwin Smith born November 8, 1947
3-Paula Jean (Smith) Jones Holcomb born March 2, 1950
4-Dorothy Imogene (Smith) Vancil Householder born August 1, 1953
5-Eva Shirleen (Smith) Conner Howell "Sherry) born June 9, 1956
6-Jimmy Wayne Smith born October 28, 1964
She is survived by her six children: Charles (and Linda Sue) Smith of St. Francis, AR; Glen Smith of St. Francis, AR; Paula Holcomb of Piggott, AR; Dorothy Vancil of Pollard, AR; Sherry Conner of Piggott, AR, Jim Smith of Pollard, AR; two brothers, Pete Karnes of McDougal, AR; and Gaylon Karnes of Truman, AR; two sisters, Peggy Robertson of Sweet Home, Oregon and Patricia Isbell of Jonesboro, AR; 16 grandchildren (including Charles Edward Smith, Jr., Justin Smith, Jeff Smith (children of Charles and Linda Sue Smith), Kim Smith-Johnson, Missy Harmon, Carla Russell, and Glen Smith Jr. (children of Glen and Janie Smith), Larry Jones, Tina Gossett (children of Paula), and 12 great grandchildren
