Joe was a son of Joseph A. and Amelia "Milla" (Sharpe) Yancey . He was a sibling of George Harrison, Mary M., and Orlando O. Yancey, all buried here in Union Cemetery. He most probably met Rosa when she was staying with her grandmother Lucy (Kerr) Riggs at the house of Lucy's brother, Dr. Harvey Kerr, in Broad Ripple, a NW suburb of Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana in 1877-1880. Rosa reunited with her family in Bakersfield in January 1880. He followed her there later in 1880 and they married in Bakersfield on 7 Dec 1882.
