Olof Strom's grandfather, Olof Mårtensson (1744-1821), owned Viken farm no. 9 in Alfta Parish, Gävleborgs län, Sweden. The 1803-1810 Household Examination Records of Alfta Parish include three generations of Olof's family at Viken 9 with the following information:

VIKEN No 9
Olof Mårtensson 14 Feb 1744
Wife: Catharina Jonsdotter 4 Oct 1746
Farmer's son: Jonas Olsson 14 Aug 1778
Wife: Karin Persdotter 7 July 1779
Son: Olof 25 Apr 1807
Son: Per 21 Oct 1809

Daughter: Anna 9 Jan 1776, married 1807
Daughter: Christina 23 Dec 1785

Olof and Catharina's only son, Jonas, lived at the farm with his family. He inherited Viken 9 from his father. Olof and Catharina's daughters, Anna and Christina, are listed at the bottom. Each generation bore the name of their father as a patronymic:

Olof Mårtensson father of Jonas Olsson father of Olof and Per Jonsson.

Olof and Per both received military names during service in the Swedish Army: Olof Jonsson Ström and Per Jonsson Engström. Both married and lived at Viken 9 with their families. Along with two of their younger siblings, they left Sweden to join the Bishop Hill Colony. Olof with his family and his unmarried siter, Katherine Jonsson, left Sweden in 1846. Their brother Jonas Jonsson also left in 1846. Jonas and his family perished when their ship was lost as sea. Per Jonsson Engström had planned to leave in 1846 but his wife was pregnant. Their family emigrated in 1853.

Brothers Olof Ström and Peter Engstöm, reunited at Bishop Hill, once again farmed next to each other. They did so for the rest of their lives. Upon the dissolution of the Colony, Olof and his family received 50 acres in section 14 of Weller Township in 1865. This farm was just northwest of Bishop Hill. In 1868 they sold this farm and purchased 80 acres in Cambridge Township. Peter Engström bought an adjoining 80 acres in Cambridge.

Olof and Martha raised their family at Bishop Hill. Two of their children died at a young age: Jonas 1 (1833-1834) died as an infant in Sweden. A second Jonas (b. 1843) traveled to America with his parents but died in the early years at Bishop Hill.

Oldest daughter, Catherine (1836-1928) married German immigrant, Frank Steinbaugh, in 1855. Frank served in the Civil War and the family then homesteaded in Nebraska. After Frank's death, Catherine remarried. When he second husband died she lived with her daughter. Catherine spent the last decade of her 92 years in California.

Daughter Martha (1838-1918) married at age 35 to fellow Alfta Parish native, Eric Ericson. Eric and Martha did not have children. Olof sold half of his land to Martha, but she then sold it back when she and Eric purchased a small farm a few miles away.

Olof and Martha's youngest son, Elias (1851-1926), was born at Bishop Hill. He married another colonist, Sarah (Sigrid) Gillyam, in 1871. Elias farmed with his father in Cambridge Township. The two sold the farm in December 1885, six months before Olof's death. Perhaps the sale was in preparation for a move to the West. Elias and Sarah moved to Kansas in late 1886 or early 1887. A few years later they relocated to Nance County, Nebraska, near Elias' sister Catherine Alexander. Elias and Sarah had five children, three born in Henry County, and two in Kansas.

Martha Persdotter Ström died in Cambridge Township in 1882. He obituary states she was buried at Bishop Hill. Olof died four years later, on 14 July 1886, at his residence in Henry County (Henry County IL Probate Minutes Vol K, p 276).

According to information given to me at the Bishop Hill historical office, Olof Strom owned Lot 153 in the Bishop Hill Cemetery. Martha Erickson's burial is listed in Lot 153 by BHBR. Presumably the BHBR team did not find the obituary for her mother, Martha Strom. Eric J. Ericson, Martha Ericson's husband, is listed in BHBR but no lot location is specified.

The Bishop Hill Burial Records (BHBR) was compiled by a team from the Bishop Hill Old Setters Association and published in 2011. The publication explains that the team collected "village record books, death records, older readings, photos and obituaries." It is clear BHBR is not simply a publication of original cemetery burial records but also includes reconstructions based on obituaries and other sources.

Martha Ström's obituary states her funeral was conducted at the Bishop Hill Cemetery by two clergy persons, one of whom was Rev. Jonas Olson, one of the original leaders of the Bishop Hill Colony and the primary preacher following Eric Janson's murder.

While BHBR does not list burials for Martha and Olof Strom, Martha's obituary proves her burial was at Bishop Hill. The probate record for Olof proves he died in Henry County. It is reasonable to conclude both are buried in the lot owned by Olof Strom.

Gravesite Details

Per BH Office, Olof Strom owned Lot 153 at Bishop Hill Cemetery. The lot is unmarked but depressions suggest the presence of multiple burials.
