"Lawrence E. Woodruff, 81, Genesee Farmer
MOSCOW - Lawrence Eugene Woodruff, a longtime Genesee farmer, died Tuesday at Latah Health Services from complications of Parkinson's disease. he was 81.
He was born Aug. 18, 1917, to Norman and Bertha McFarland Woodruff at Wessington, S.D. He grew up there and attended the Bates Elementary School, a country school near their home. He was valedictorian of Sand Creek High School there in 1935.
He moved west with his brother, settling in Genesee, where he went to work as a farmhand for the Aherin family, later working for the Evans family.
He married Norma Grieser Oct. 12, 1941, at Genesee.
He continued to work for the evanses until he began working for John and Rowena Luedke for the next 18 years.
Following that he leased the farmland and equipment from Luedkes and operated their farm along with the Grieser farm until he retired in 1983.
he was a member of the Genesee Volunteer Fire Department for more than 25 years. He served on the Genesee Medical Board and the board of the Genesee Union Warehouse Co.
He enjoyed fishing and gardening.
He is survived by his wife at the family home, a son, harvey Woodruff of Kent, Wash.; a daughter, Marlys Freeland of Milwaukie, Ore.; five granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter; a sister, Betty Patridge of Lewiston; and a brother Victor Woodruff of Wolsey, S.D.
Two brothers, Joy and Norman Woodruff, and two sisters, Arlene Smith and Gladys Bell, died previously.
Viewing will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Genesee. The celebrant will be the Rev. Robert Finucane.
Burial will follow at St. mary's Catholic Cemetery in Genesee."
