Mexican historic figure and murder victim. Wife of conqueror Hernando Cortés, she was a Spanish noble remembered for the mysterious circumstances aoround her death, rumored to be murder. Considered one of the first murder victims in the Viceroyalty of New Spain, Catalina arrived with her family to the Hispaniola, where she met and married Cortés and soon moved to his newly built home in Coyoacán. On the day of her death, a meal was served for the marriage and their guest when Cortés mentioned the humble origins of Catalina after her complaints on infidelity, which caused her to leave to her room. After the guests were dismissed, Cortés went to her room and after three hours of silence, a scream was heard in the house as Catalina lay dead. Multiple testimonies of the people in the house were recorded and coincided in that Catalina, on Cortes's lap, looked like a person who had died of drowning, with marks on her body, the bed urinated and discarded, as well as pieces of her broken necklace on the floor. After her death, she was buried in a newly built chapel close to the house and epilepsy was blamed for her death. No further investigations were carried out into the controversial death, but it became one of the causes of the residence trials with which Cortés was persecuted until his death.Hernado Cortes Wife
