JOSEPH R. AMBERS , 69, of Todd Drive, a retired school principal, died Monday at Morton Hospital in Taunton.

He was the husband of Irene M. (Gagnon) Ambers . They had been married 47 years.

Born in Norwood, Mass., he was a son of the late Joseph and Helena (Cydrik) Ambruskevich. He was a graduate of Norwood High School, class of 1949, and received a bachelor of science in mathematics degree from Boston College in 1953. He also earned a master of education degree from Bridgewater State College.

Mr. Ambers was concurrently an elementary school principal at Falls School in Attleboro Falls, and at the School Street School in North Attleboro, for many years before retiring in 1991.

Prior to that, he had been the principal at the Joseph W. Martin School in North Attleboro, and had taught in elementary schools in Plainville and Mansfield.

He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Ambers enjoyed playing bridge and poker.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, James R. Ambers of Seekonk; a daughter, Carolyn I. Dykas of Pawtucket; three brothers, John Ambruskevich, Chester Ambruskevich and Alfred Ambers , all of Norwood; four grandchildren and six nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck St., followed by a funeral Mass at 10 in Holy Ghost Church, 71 Linden St. Burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery.
