Daniel Crawford Agnew was the "father" of the Agnew family in West Virginia. He served for Pennsylvania in the Civil War (Co. I 22 Pa. Cav.), and spent time in western Virginia (present-day WV). Family legend states that D.C. Agnew was injured in the war and nursed back to health by the family of his future wife, Sidney Hartman, in Hampshire County. D.C. and Sidney were married in Mineral County, WV, on November 2, 1869. They had five children, four of whom survived to adulthood. Those four were John William (b. 1870), Flora "Della" (b. 1877), Susan Naomi (b. 1880), and Martha May (b. 1884). Susan and Martha never married.
