US Congressman. He was born in Martin, Georgia and worked as a teacher and school administrator while attending college. Landrum graduated from Piedmont College in 1939, received a law degree from the Atlanta Law School in 1941 and became an attorney in Canton. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a Private for World War II, received a commission, served in Europe and was discharged as a First Lieutenant. After returning home he was employed by the US Veterans' Administration, served as a Georgia Assistant Attorney General, and was Executive Secretary for Governor's Governor. Landrum practiced law in Jasper from 1948 until his election to Congress. In 1952 he was the successful Democratic nominee for a seat in the US House of Representatives, serving 12 terms, 1953 to 1977. In Congress Landrum was an opponent of desegregation, and was one of the authors of 1959's Landrum-Griffin Act, which ensured secret balloting in union elections, and required unions to file financial reports with the Secretary of Labor. He was not a candidate for reelection in 1976 and lived in retirement in Jasper until his death from heart failure at Pickens General Hospital.
