Wilbur was secretary of the Kansas Farmers' Fire Insurance Co. in Abilene for many years until about 1891 or 1892 when it failed in the depression. He then joined another company in Chicago, the Merchants' Insurance Co. of New Jersey, hoping to recoup his losses, but he died shortly thereafter. His second child was born three weeks after his death.

Mr. Burbank's grave is marked by an extremely unusual and at the same time very beautiful gravestone. His beloved pet, "Bel," an English bloodhound, died of heartbreak following Wilbur's death. So close were the two that the widow was inspired to, in her own way, keep them forever together. She engaged the services of a sculptor who made from photographs a life-sized statue of the dog in sandstone. This statue now stands guard at the front of the grave and the likeness is said to be so great that it is startling.
