Note: his name was originally published as Clarence, but both cemetery records and death certificate are in the name of Francis J. Irwin. His funeral notice stated name as Francis.
Clarence Irwin, a clerk in the office of the trainmaster for the C. P. & St. L. railroad, took his life yesterday morning in a room at the Leland hotel by shooting himself. His body was found shortly after 5 o'clock by a bell boy. He asked in a note that his sister, Clara Irwin, Washington, D. C., be notified in case of illness. A letter in his pocket indicated that he had mailed his sister a deed for his property. Two checks, one on a Springfield bank and one on a Lincoln, Neb, bank, made payable to his sister, were also found. It was thought at first that the dead man was Francis J. Irwin but it was later discovered that he was not known at that place.
He failed to show up for work yesterday, his employer stated. IL State Register, Springfield, IL 4-24-1918
Funeral services for Francis Irwin will be held this morning at the Metcalf undertaking establishment. Interment in Oak Ridge. IL State Journal, Springfield, IL 4-26-1918
