Born in Humboldt, Tennessee on November 9, 1939 while his mother was traveling, Dan was the only child of Hulette James Massie of Como, Mississippi and Maxie O'Daniel Massie of Rutherford, Tennessee. He grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi and Jackson, Mississippi and considered Jackson to be his home. Along with his parents, Dan was a charter member of the Meadowbrook Church of Christ in Jackson, and Meadowbrook was a very important part of his childhood. He graduated from Murrah High School in Jackson in 1957 and Abilene Christian College in Abilene, Texas in 1960. After graduating from college, he returned home to Jackson to attend the University of Mississippi Medical School, graduating in 1964.
When in Memphis for post-residency training in 1969, Dan met his future wife, Connie Curtis of Iuka, Mississippi, at the Union Avenue Church of Christ. They wed on October 19, 1969 and were married for over 52 years.
Dan was a physician in several cities across the Southeast, spending the majority of his career practicing radiology at University of Tennessee Medical Center in Memphis. During his practicing years, he trained innumerable medical students and residents and was well-loved and respected among them for his humility and kindness.
Dan was a member of Highland Church of Christ and served as an elder for 25 years. Participating in countless ministries, he also spent time serving on the boards at HopeWorks and Agape. He used his retirement years looking for any and all ways to minister to others, whether acting as a HopeWorks Faith Encourager, making visits to the prison, teaching through World Bible School, visiting Highland members in the hospital, offering widows a ride to church, or simply providing an encouraging word to someone in need.
Preceded in death by his parents, Hulette and Maxie Massie and beloved cousins Clyde McKee, John McKee, and Alice McKee Henderson.
