He was the son of Philipp SMITH and Margaret DINGELDINE. According to other researchers, his parents emigrated from Rimbach, Germany to the United States around 1852.

The 1910 and 1920 Census reports indicate that Edward SMITH married Emma Jane LONG (1857-1944) in 1877. They had six children:

2. Warren E. SMITH b: ABT 1888 in PA
3. Ruth F. SMITH b: ABT 1891 in VA
4. Robert S. SMITH b: ABT 1894 in VA
5. H. Q. SMITH
6. Benjamin S. SMITH
