Now well into her golden years, Billie Kubel of Affton is spending her life performing music and encouraging others to keep singing and dancing through life.  Kubel is the president of the Rubinstein Music Club in St. Louis, one of the oldest music clubs in the country, which gives music scholarships to children. She also performed with the Woerner Music Club for 14 years. The Woerner Music Club started as a way to raise money for Woerner Elementary School in South City, but it quickly blossomed into a long-term passion for the women involved, including Kubel.
Kubel was also involved in founding The Funtastics musical group, and she worked with the Christmas Carols Association every year on their annual shows. She is a member of the National Federation of Music Clubs, and she also volunteers her time with OASIS, a program that enriches the lives of seniors by providing, among other things, opportunities to help tutor kids at schools around the country.
She even competed in the 2001 Ms. Missouri Senior America Pageant—a traditional pageant competition for women over the age of 60. "I was in the Broadway Fantasies Senior Stage Show," she said. "It was really fun for me."
Participants show off their talents, model evening gowns, share their philosophy of life and do a personal interview with the judges. "They asked me my philosophy of life, and I said, 'to raise my kids and keep them out of trouble and to believe in God," Kubel said.
Joan Daues, former pageant director remembers when Kubel participated. "Billie has a very nice soprano voice." Marcene Tochman, who was stage director and cameo club president in 2001, remembers her song and costume. "She sang 'Vaya con Dios' and was all dressed in her Spanish outfit," Tochman said. She still has the Spanish outfit, worthy of a Broadway performer.
In fact, after years of performances, Kubel has collected a huge costume closet in her basement full of elaborate rhinestone costumes and has performed in shows, pageants, church programs.
Recovering from a broken hip, Kubel says she has no intentions of competing again. Still, she enjoys looking at pictures and a scrapbook from the many shows she performed in, and she remains a big fan of the pageant. This year's Ms. Missouri Senior America Pageant will be held July 10 at the Florissant Civic Center Theatre.
"The pageant is put on by the Cameo Club, and I really hope people will support it," Kubel said. "I really enjoyed competing. I like what it all stands for, and they raise a lot of money for local charities."
Kubel and her husband Earl have two grown children, Scott and Kimberly. Growing up her children always wanted to watch her perform, and she tried to get both of them into music, she said.
"Kim quit piano as soon as she dared," she said, adding, however, that her son Scott plays the guitar.
Kubel spends much of her time now doting on her three grandchildren, Ally Kubel and Geoffrey and Christopher King. Still, she finds time to share her opinions about music with her friends and family and on the Internet. When she saw an article in Patch about , she felt compelled to comment on it.
"Music is a gift," she wrote. "It belongs to each person whether a child or adult… The more music in schools the better."
