James was born Dec. 14, 1929, in Navasota to the late Ross Smith and Nann Earle Steele. He graduated from high school in Jacksonville and from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville in 1951. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed at Fort Eustis in Newport News, Va. Upon his discharge in 1953, he began working at Convair-General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) and retired after 35 years of service. During his tenure, he served as a manager for the F-16 program. He was a model airplane enthusiast who designed, built and flew with his model airplane club. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Tamia Smith, in 2006.
