Veteran - US Navy, LT, WWII.
Dorothy Parman Andrus died in her sleep on April 3, 2000. Born in 1916 on Long Island, N.Y., she was 83.
She grew up in a large, loving family on Long Island. She graduated from the State University of New York at Courtland and, after her service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, she moved to Davis in 1956 with her husband, Bill, and their two children.

She lived in her house on Willowbank Road for 44 years.

Dorothy was a strong, adventurous, independent spirit, family members said. She got a pilot's license in the '30s and taught navigation to Navy pilots.

Raised a Republican, she ended up voting for Eugene McCarthy, a liberal Democrat, for president.

At UC Davis, she began her career as a part-time secretary and finished it as the director of services for international students and scholars.

She was active in neighborhood, community and national affairs. She donation to many causes, was on the board of the Davis Art Center and was a stalwart in the United World Federalists for many years. Much of her life was dedicated to world peace and international understanding.

She was a loving wife, sister and mother. She was a friend, neighbor, mentor and colleague to many. She made her house a home for people from many countries. Her plain-spokenness won her admirers and got her into trouble. And she loved to dance.

Her spirit, intelligence and generosity set a high example. She will be sorely missed.

She leaves behind her brother, Herbert of Chappaqua, N.Y.; sisters, Bernice of Wappinger's Fall, N.Y., and Mildred of Bethpage, N.Y.; in-laws, James and Mary Louise Whitsell of Carmichael; her son, Robert; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at noon Friday at her home, 27293 Willowbank Road, Davis. All friends are welcome.
