Funeral: 10 a.m. Monday in Cockrell Chapel at First Baptist Church in Garland. Graveside service: 2:30 p.m. at Venus Cemetery in Venus.
Mrs. Rice, the fifth of eight children, was born May 31, 1905, in Venus, to W. A. and Deborah James Shirley. Her roots in Texas and in Johnson County were deep, going back to 1869, when her grandfather's family traveled by wagon from Kentucky to Texas.
She was a lifelong Baptist.
She married Macon L. Rice in 1922. Mrs. Rice was assistant postmaster in the Venus Post Office from 1943 until the death of her husband, who served as postmaster, in 1967.
In later years, she lived in Midlothian and Arlington before moving to Dallas when her health declined.
Mrs. Rice was a strong, resilient woman who weathered with grace and dignity the Depression, the loss of her husband, the loss of all of her brothers and sisters and, finally, the loss of her sight and independence.
She was a gifted storyteller and writer with a deep love of words. She was a wonderful cook and filled her home with warmth, beauty and order.
Survivors: Daughters, Jean Mann and husband, Bill of Austin, Barbara Key and husband, Earl of Garland; grandchildren, Barbra Wall and husband, Robyn of Philadelphia, Pa., Debra Mann of Austin, Becky Norsworthy and husband, Kenneth of Anchorage, Alaska, Greg Key and wife, Diane of Amarillo and Linda Willingham and husband, Chuck of Kennewick, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Andrew Norsworthy, Sarah Norsworthy, Meredith Willingham, Lindsay Willingham, Christy Perkins, James Key, Jennifer Key, Angi LoRe, Adam Wall and Austin Wall; great-great-grandchildren, Ian and Keygan Perkins; sister-in-law, Amye Russell and husband, Jack of Burleson; and other members of the extended family.
