The daughter of James Wood, she and her siblings were sent to England from Australia for part of their education, with only Agnes not returning, remaining instead with an aunt. The remainder of her siblings later moved to Christchurch, New Zealand.

In 1866 she became engaged to the architect Richard Norman Shaw and on 16 July the following year the couple married at St John-at-Hampstead, in whose churchyard they are now buried. Cecil Wood (1878-1947; memorial ID 241123655), son of Agnes' brother Robert, was talented at drawing and followed Shaw into becoming a professional architect (Helms, Ruth (1996). The architecture of Cecil Wood (PDF) (PhD). University of Canterbury. pp. 10–12)).

Late in Richard's life the couple moved to 6 Ellerdale Road, less than 400 yards from where they are now buried.
