Edgar was the eldest of five children born to John M. Butt of Union Co. GA & Ruth Adeline Smith of Morganton in Fannin Co. GA. Official records and family papers show the family name as "Butt", however later in their lives Edgar and his brother Robert added an 's' to spell their surname as "Butts".

He married on 17 Aug 1893 at Fannin Co. to Sallie Adeline McKinney of Blue Ridge GA. The marriage was contentious between their respective families because their fathers were competitors in campaigning to have the railroad built through their respective towns -- John Butt at Morganton and Michael McKinney at nearby Blue Ridge. The latter would prevail.

Edgar was a member of the Masonic Lodge and worked as a dry good salesman and real estate broker in Fannin Co. before removing to Lenoir City TN where he worked as a pipefitter and machinist for the Lenoir Car Works, a plant for building and repairing freight cars.
