James Holloway Stellar, a U.S. Navy veteran who was an active as a volunteer for many organizations in Redlands after his retirement, died on Jan. 7, 2022. He was 92.

Born in Pasadena Nov. 20, 1930, he was raised in San Marino and graduated from Harvard School (now Harvard-Westlake School) in 1948. After graduation, he served in the Navy, receiving a medical discharge in 1950. He then attended Occidental College and graduated from the University of Arizona in 1954 with a bachelor of science in economics.

Stellar met his future wife Virginia Jean "Jeanne" Crager while volunteering as a junior high leader at a YMCA in Long Beach. They were married in 1960 and lived in Long Beach until moving to Redlands in 1967.

Stellar worked with Hayden Inc. (now Hayden Industrial of San Bernardino), where he advanced to vice president of the Industrial Division. During this time he served in the Society of Automotive Engineers as a secretary and vice president.

Stellar established the first Harvard-Westlake scholarship in 1988. This was the beginning of Holloway's retirement career of service. He joined Redlands Loyal Knights of the Round Table, becoming international president in 1990 to 1999. Stellar is the founder of the San Gorgonio Pass Round Table. He also served on the Redlands YMCA board. Stellar served on the vestry at Trinity Episcopal Church as well as on various committees, and as a counselor for many years at Trinity's summer camp.

Stellar became a volunteer at Redlands Community Hospital in 1991, serving for 30 years. In 2005 he became the first male president of the hospital auxiliary. Also in 1991 Stellar joined the Redlands Police Department Citizens Volunteer Patrol, and was active for 25 years. In 2021 he was honored for 30 years of service with Citizens Volunteer Patrol.

Stellar also participated in the Redlands Fourth of July band, playing baritone horn. He was involved in the YMCA youth circus and Boy Scouts. His favorite recreational activities were surfing and camping. Stellar loved freshwater aquariums, collecting owls and reading.

His son Jim Jr. and his two brothers, the Rev. Canon Robert T. Stellar, D.D. and Dr. Richard E. Stellar, M.D, predeceased Stellar. His wife Jeanne, son Donald and his wife Nancy; granddaughter Nicole Stellar Guerrero and her husband Eric Christopher Guerrero; grandson Brandon Leroy, great-grandson Kole Ezekiel Guerrero; and cousins, nieces and nephews, survive him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the "Stellar Family Scholarship Fund" at Harvard-Westlake School, 3700 Coldwater Canyon, Studio City, CA 91604 or to Trinity Episcopal Church "Camp Fund," 419 S. Fourth St., Redlands.
