Rev. Daniel Williams, ex-rector of Emmanuel
NEWPORT -- The Rev. Daniel Quinby Williams, former rector of Emmanuel Church, chaplain of the Newport Police and Fire Departments and president-elect of the Newport Council of the Navy League, died unexpectedly Tuesday at Newport Hospital. He was 80.
A native of Cleveland, he was born Oct. 22, 1904, a son of the late Daniel Fred and Helen Laura Clock Williams. He married Ruth Milliken in 1932.
Mr. Williams received a bachelor of philosophy degree from Kenyon College in 1927. After a career in industry, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1949. From 1948 to 1951, he served as deacon, vicar and rector of All Saints Church in the Pontiac section of Warwick, before being called to the rectorship of Emmanuel Church.
After his retirement in 1976, he served as priest-in-charge of St. Paul's Church in Portsmouth until 1978 and as assistant at Trinity Church until 1980. He was president of the Trinity Church Needlework Guild and made many of the kneelers at the church.
At the time of his death, he was pastoral assistant at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Bristol.
In addition to his church service, Mr. Williams was active in the Newport Council of the Navy League and was president-elect at the time of his death. He also served locally as board member and president of Relief Family Social Services.

NEWPORT -- Funeral services for the Rev. Daniel Quinby Williams, former rector of Emmanuel Church and chaplain of the Newport Police and Fire Departments, were conducted Saturday afternoon in Trinity Church.
Retired Episcopal Bishop John S. Higgins of Rhode Island officiated. He was assisted by the Rev. Canon D. Lorne Coyle, rector of Trinity Church; the Rev. Canon Clifton Daniels, rector of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Bristol; the Rev. Herbert Bolles, priest-in-charge of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth; the Rev. Marston Price, assistant rector of Trinity Church; the Rev. Robert Williams, police chaplain and pastor of Community Baptist Church; the Rev. James Bocchino, deacon of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth; and the Rev. Ashley Peckham, rector of St. Alban's Church, Centerdale.
Burial was in Trinity Cemetery, Portsmouth, where Mr. Peckham and Canon Coyle read the committal prayers. The final blessing was given by Bishop Higgins. Bearers from the Newport Police Department were Patrolman Kevin Sullivan, inspector Eugene Sullivan, inspector Al Conti, Patrolman John Sperling, Patrolman Carl Oakland, retired Lt. John Hopkins and retired Capt. John Tilley.
