Sister Helene Chernesky, SSC
February 1, 1931 - September 1, 2011
Sister Helene Chernesky, (Isabelle Rose) (80) was born to Matthew and Helen Lescavage Chernesky of New Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 1, 1931. God blessed the family with two sons, Vincent and Albert, but Isabelle was the only daughter. Isbelle Rose was babtized in the parish church of Sacred Heart, and then attended the parish school which was taught by the Sisters of St. Casimir. She later attended and graduated from St. Stephen High School in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Although even at graduation, Isabelle felt a longing to follow Christ's call to the religious life, she decided to follow her mother's advice and spend a bit of time in the work force before making her final decision. She worked as a secretary of two years, and in October, 1951, Isabelle arived at the Sisters of St. Casimir Motherhouse to begin her preparations in becoming a religious sister.

On August 15, 1954, Isabelle, now Sister Helene, pronounced her first religious vows as a Sister of St. Casimir. She recieved her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Marywood College Scranton, Pennsylvania and her Master of Arts Degree from Perdue University of Indiana. During her 39 years in the field of education, Sister Helene taught at Providence of God, Holy Cross, Our Lady of Vilna, and Immaculate Conception Schools in Chicago, Illinois, and St. Peter, Rosewell New Mexico. On the High School level, Sister taught at Maria High School, Chicago Illinois and Villa Joseph Marie, Holland, Pennsylvania. For five years Sister served as principal of St. Norbert School, Northbrooke, Illinois. In 1984 Sister returned to Maria High School where she expertly filled the duty of Business Manager for the school until 1989. When she retired, she assumed the job of Business Manager for Maria High School Convent, a job she held until she moved to the Motherhouse.

Sister Helene loved to pray. The prayer group which met each week in the Beverly area enjoyed having Sister Helene as one of their members. Every Monday evening, regardless of weather, rain, snow, or storm, sister was prepared and ready for her ride to the prayer group. It was a constant joy which she waited for each week.

Sister loved to read and her taste in reading covered the gamut: biographies, novels, magazines, of which The Ligourian was her favorite. She especially enjoyed the Biblical quiz each month, but was careful to put her answers on a separate sheet, so that others who shared her copy could enjoy taking the quiz as well. That was a part of Sister's way, always thoughtful of the other person.

Many of Sister's friends were recipients of the exquisite afghans she knitted over the years. As her needles clicked away, she prayed. Her deep love of God is reflected in lines she wrote at the time of her Golden Jubilee. "As I look over the past 50 years I cannot but be affected by the speed with which my life as a religious has passed, with peace and joy in the Lord increasing with each passing year. My vocation was and is the journey the Lord has planned for me. Over the years I have learned He is always there for me. The wisdom that my life is in a deep relationship with the Lord has developed in me to place all my faith and trust only in Him, regardless of the circumstances or challenges of each day. As a member of the Sisters of St. Casimir, I join the rest of the Sisters to further the Kingsom of God here on earth willingly and with much love. This is our gift to the church and to the world." This gift of self was Sister Helene's gift throughout her life.

As Sister's health began to fail in 2010, she came to live at the Motherhouse Infirmary where she received the care she needed. During these days, she was always grateful for the care the infirmary staff gave her and for the visits of the sisters and her friends. The Lord whom she loved, called her to her eternal home early on the first day of September, 2011.
