Ruth Hannah Zelmer, 82, of Berrien Springs died early Monday morning, Nov. 7, 2005, at Rosehill Manor Assisted Living Home in Berrien Springs.

In fulfillment of her wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Allred Funeral Home of Berrien Springs is serving the family.

Ruth was born May 23, 1923, in Bridgman, the daughter of Rudolph and Augusta (Hemming) Backus. She married Oscar Zelmer on July 2, 1948, and she enjoyed being a homemaker for her husband and three children. She was a lady who liked being at her home, and she enjoyed going for walks. Ruth was a collector of unicorn figurines, and her favorite foods were hamburgers and hot chocolate with miniature marsh mallows. The Rev. Paul Nolte from Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire ministered to her in her final hours.

Survivors include her two daughters Janet (William) Robards of Eau Claire and Connie (Mike) Hayes of Washington; her son, Edward (Carla) Zelmer of Berrien Springs; seven grand children and 10 great-grandchil dren; and one sister, Romona Stephens of St. Joseph.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar, on July 22, 1999; three sisters, Rowena Schaller, Ronata Batek and Ruby Platz; and two brothers, Raymond and Rudolph Backus.
