John Henry Sunderland was born January 5, 1912, the son of Harold and Susan (Gillespie) Sunderland, in Milton, ND where he grew up and attended school. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Jamestown College and a Master's Degree from UND, before teaching at schools in Osnabrock Township, Milton and Edinburg, ND, schools. He married Dorothy Stewart June 5, 1941, in Nekoma, ND. After serving in the U.S. Navy with a communications staff, he taught in Nekoma, ND, Crystal, ND and in Cavalier, ND where he was the school administrator for 17 years.
Survivors are his wife, Dorothy; their daughter, Peggy (Mrs. Dan) Pattok, Mount Lake Terrace, WA; their son, John Pal, Grand Forks, ND; their two grandchildren; his brothers: Morice A. Sunderland, Fargo, ND; and Robert D. Sunderland, Fargo, ND; and his sister, Kathleen (Mrs. Francis) McMerty, Fargo, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters: Laurie Hamilton, Lela Aston, Dorothy Carpenter, Winifred Stewart; and two brothers: Harold Wilbur Sunderland and Charles William Sunderland.
Funeral services Monday, March 26, 1990, in the Presbyterian Church, Cavalier, ND.
Burial in the Cavalier Cemetery.
