Marks John Biddle, a highly regarded nephew of state Senator Charles Biddle, was born on May 24, 1765, Reading, Pennsylvania, the son of James and Frances Marks Biddle; pursued business, studied law within the Biddle family; embarked on a successful business career; and joined the Reading and Philadelphia bars in 1788. He married, in 1793, Jane Dundas of Philadelphia, the niece of Sir Ralph Dundas, Major-General in the British Army. Marks John was the first proprietor of the tavern, "Biddle's Spring," purchased from the Penn family; was a Major, Sixth Pa. Regt., 1st Battalion Pa. Militia, 1794; elected to the state Senate, 1816-1819; and chosen prothonotary of Berks County by Gov. Hiester, 1821-1823. After public service, Senator Biddle retired to his business pursuits until he died on August 11, 1849, age 84, interred in Christ Church Episcopal Cemetery, Reading, beside his wife who had died two months earlier.
